Using Geo-Encryption to Protect High-Value Data

GeoCodex’ new Smartphone Application for Geo-Encryption (SAGE) combines Location-Based Encryption/Decryption (L-BED) with proven encryption technologies to enable affordable, secure network-based Geo-Encrypted key management.

SAGE uses Windows Mobile Smartphones as virtual dongles that link the Smartphones to pre-authorized PCs via Bluetooth connections. This makes it possible for workplace PCs that lack GPS to securely deploy L-BED

How SAGE works:

  • Data specified for encryption is encrypted by a SAGE server using AES encryption
  • The SAGE server disaggregates the decryption key for the AES-encrypted data into two “secret shares” – one for the PC and one for the Smartphone
  • The SAGE server Geo-Encrypts the Smartphone’s secret share for specified locations and times and then securely transmits it to the Smartphone
  • The SAGE server securely transmits the PC’s secret share to the PC
  • Upon receipt of the Geo-Encrypted secret share, the Smartphone uses its location measuring capabilities to Geo-Decrypt the share
  • The Smartphone transmits the Geo-Decrypted share to the PC using a secure Bluetooth connection
  • If the Smartphone’s Geo-Decryption occurred within the specified location and time, the PC will be able to reconstruct the AES encrypted key and decrypt the AES-encrypted data. If it is outside the location or time constraints, it won’t be able to

 

SAGE Benefits:

  • With a Smartphone, an employee can have transparent access to encrypted files at any pre-authorized locations such as the office PC, home PC, hotel PC, etc
  • SAGE provides flexibility - entire networks or just single files can be Geo-Encrypted
  • On the Smartphone, both the encrypted data and key management functionality are stored in volumes on secure MicroSD cards. The volumes themselves are Geo-Encrypted and only accessible at authorized locations and times
  • If a Smartphone is stolen or misplaced, the use of secret shares prevents the compromise of the complete decryption key - and the use of encrypted volumes means the underlying data remains secure
  • SAGE uses both A-GPS and Skyhook to aid indoor reception on the Smartphone
